I've been in the cells when i taught here in the early 90s. Once the cell door closes it is pitch black. Cold. Silent. As a punishment it must have been sanity depriving. Time and space vanish. Cold black hell.

We have had a few "ghostly" stories over the years. Sudden blasts of cold air with no explanation. Doors opening and closing. The only way to know for sure is to visit and wander and hope to feel the presence if you dare......Ange Jenkins - Library staff member

"The [library] building now houses Ballarat's brightest minds. In 1880, it housed Ballarat's most callous criminals.
Most of the cells have now been "sealed off", according to staff – a nice way of saying the clay and bluestone walls have caved in.
Now, the only known access to the rooms which housed bank robbers, bush rangers and murderers is a small trap door beneath the sofa in the library..."
