My relative, Arthur Pickford was the creator of the Shell Mosaic celebrating the1956 Olympic Rowing on Lake Wendouree. This is one of the last examples of his work. Arthur was a surviving veteran Charger of the Battle of Beersheba. The work is of great social, miliitary and cultural significance for Ballarat and it’s wider national and international communities.

The rowing club shell mural was constructed by Arthur Pickford to commemorate the Olympic Rowing on Lake Wendouree in 1956. Arthur constructed other shell pictures around Ballarat including the former Shell House in Lindesfarne Ave; the facade of Town Hall Hotel (current site of Myer Delivery Depot). Sergeant Arthur Pickford rode with the 4th Light Horse Regiment, the lead squadron at the Battle of Beersheba in 1917. This mural remains as a tangible, artistic and cultural legacy to the City of Ballarat.
